Engagement Opportunities 2026/2027 Academic Year

The UNL Parent and Family Association has engagement opportunities for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year.  From being a member of the Parent & Family Association Executive Board to volunteering at an event just one time, the Parent and Family Association welcomes parents and family members who want to engage with campus.

Executive Member Roles

President - Elect

In the absence of the President, the President-Elect shall perform the duties of the President. The President-Elect performs additional duties if needed and assigned by the President or the Executive Board. Please note that the President-Elect automatically advances to the position of President (2027-2028) the following year, so this is a two-year commitment

President Responsibilities and Expectations (April 2027 – March 2028)

A President plays an important role in advancing the mission of the Association by actively contributing their time, expertise, and support. Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting Participation: Attend and preside over meetings while supervising the business and affairs of the Association.  The President, along with the assistance of the Executive Board and Committee Chairs, prepares the monthly meeting agendas and distributes necessary documents in preparation for meetings.  After a President’s term ends, that individual may provide insight and assistance as needed to the current President.
  • Committee Involvement: Serve on and encourage each member to participate in at least one standing committee while tracking and assisting each committee as needed, contributing meaningfully to its initiatives and goals. Throughout each month, the President follows up with and supports ongoing business and committee projects.
  • Mission Support: Provide support, leadership, good communication, insight, feedback, and assistance to help strengthen the student and family experience.  Encourage participation by all members and a continued partnership with University staff while furthering the overall mission of the Association.
  • Volunteer Engagement: Support and provide leadership during Association-sponsored activities and events, either through in-person participation when possible or through remote assistance, as needed.  In the past, the President has been asked to speak on behalf of our parents for the Family and Friends Recognition Awards as well as be a spokesperson for the Association to serve on University special committees when requested. 

President encourages strong connections and communication between volunteers, families and the university community.

Secretary

The Secretary keeps the minutes of the membership, maintains contact information of each Board member, assist with scheduling the meeting(s) and with correspondence of the Association and duties as needed and assigned by the President or the Board.

Treasurer

The Treasurer will keep a record of all financial transaction, process payments, and will provide a financial report to the Board and members attending the meeting(s).

  • Committee Involvement: Serve on and encourage each member to participate in at least one standing committee while tracking and assisting each committee as needed, contributing meaningfully to its initiatives and goals.
  • Mission Support: Provide insight, feedback, and assistance to help strengthen communication, enhance the student and family experience, and further the overall mission of the Association.
  • Volunteer Engagement: Support Association-sponsored activities and events, either through in-person participation when possible or through remote assistance, as needed.

Non-Exec Member Roles

Member at Large

Responsibilities and Expectations (April 2026 - March 2027)

Members-at-Large play an important role in advancing the mission of the Association by actively contributing their time, expertise, and support. Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting Participation: Attend and actively engage in monthly Association meetings, with an expectation of approximately 80% attendance.
  • Committee Involvement: Serve on at least one standing committee (e.g., Fundraising, Digital & Marketing, Resource and Information, Move-In, or Parent and Family Weekend) and contribute meaningfully to its initiatives and goals.
  • Mission Support: Provide insight, feedback, and assistance to help strengthen communication, enhance the student and family experience, and further the overall mission of the Association.
  • Volunteer Engagement: Support Association-sponsored activities and events, either through in-person participation when possible or through remote assistance, as needed.
Event Volunteer

Volunteer alongside Parent & Family Association at events like Move-in, Family Weekend, Homecoming & Admitted Students Day throughout the year. 

 

Advisory Board Eligibility

  • Parent or family member of current UNL student
  • Ability to participate in monthly advisory board and, as needed, committee meetings.  Meetings are conducted on Zoom; individuals do not need to live in Nebraska.

About the UNL Parent & Family Association

Incorporated on May 18, 1987, the mission of the association is:

 

  • To strengthen the bond between the University of Nebraska and parents by encouraging communications in both directions
  • To support activities designed to enhance students' educational experience
  • To keep parents informed about the University, its background, present programs, and future plans
  • To promote the advancement of the University by strengthening it at all levels

 

The UNL Parent & Family Association is a 501 (c) (4) non-profit organization and is exempt from income tax but not from sales tax.

Advisory Board

The UNL Parent & Family Association is served by an Advisory Board of Directors, six members of which constitute the Executive Committee (president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and at least two members-at-large). Advisory Board members are nominated and elected to represent the interests of the university and its students from a geographical cross-section of the student body. On behalf of all parents, the Advisory Board members serve as an advisory committee to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We welcome your active participation and invite you to join us in supporting our student's endeavors at Nebraska.
